#1 - News/opinion blog item for midterm

A suspect has been caught hours after shooting two McHenry officers in suburban Holiday Hills early Thursday during a standoff, police said. The McHenry County Sheriff’s deputies, responded to a call around 1:30 a.m. The call was related to a domestic situation in the 1300 block of West Northeast Shore Drive for a well-being check.  Police said, the call came from outside the home and was believed to be from an out-of-state relative from the person inside the home. When the officers responded to the call, the suspect fired and both officers were struck. The suspect was identified as 52-year-old Scott B. Peters. The officers were transported to area hospitals, one was listed in stable condition and the other was listed in stable but critical condition. Sheriff Keith Nygren, confirmed one of the officers injured was officer Dwight Maness. Officials said both officers are expected to survive but will face a “long road to recovery”. Two residents were able to get out of the home, and some homes in the subdivision were evacuated. The area is still on lockdown while officials clear the scene. At this time, there is no information on why Scott B. Peters fired at the officers.
